BeppoSAX AO3 - INFORMATION

The third BeppoSAX Announcement of Opportunity (AO3) has been released on Dec. 8, 1998. This AO is dedicated to the Core Program and to the Guest Observers Program and covers the period 1st March 1999-28th February 2000.

The Deadline for CP & GOP is February 1, 1999

The complete AO3 documentation ( Announcement , SAX Observer Handbook) is available from our anonymous FTP account of www.sdc.asi.it in directory pub/sax/doc.

Proposers should carefully read the AO3 announcement and the technical sections of the SAX Observer handbook and of the Addendum

Response matrices, effective area files, for all instruments (LECS, MECS, HPGSPC, PDS and WFC) and background files for the four NFI are also located in the pub/sax/cal/responses/97_9 and pub/sax/cal/bgd/97_5 portions of the www.sdc.asi.it anonymous FTP account.

A number of Web tools are available for the simulation of BeppoSAX data and for the estimation of exposure times etc.

  • Detailed simulations of of LECS and MECS instruments can be done with the BeppoSAX X-ray event simulator. The simulated data are in FITS/OGIP format and can be retrieved by the user or can be analyzed on-line with the tools of the BeppoSAX Interactive Archive. The use of this tool is particularly recommended for potentially confused fields and for the simulation of extended targets.

  • Examples for simulating spectra using the command-driven version of XSPEC are available here .

  • Count rates can be estimated using a WWW tool based on the HEASARC PIMMS.

  • Target visibility can be calculated with this WWW interface to the program VIEWING.

  • A tool for the AO3 Proposal Form Preparation is available; help can be obtained here.
