28 March 1997
Dear BeppoSAX user,

this is the forth BeppoSAX "e-mail news" message and covers the
following topics:

	1. Reprocessed LECS data
	2. BeppoSAX AO1 papers
	3. BeppoSAX sources naming convention
	4. Rise time thresholds for PDS data

1. Reprocessed LECS data
- -----------------------

Because of a software bug in the FOT production system, a fraction of
good LECS data was rejected by the SAXDAS reduction software. In some
rare cases this fraction amounted to a large part of the observation.
In most cases the fraction of good data lost was of the order of 10-20%.
The exposure times and count rates were computed correctly by the
SAXDAS software, simply, part of good LECS data was not used.

The bug was fixed on February 6th 1997, so the data processed after
this date are free from this problem.

All affected FOTs have been regenerated and reprocessed. New cleaned
and linearized event files have been produced and will be made
available through the on line archive within the next week. The files
will be referred to as "rev0.2".

Additional information can be requested as usual sending an e-mail to
helpdesk@sax.sdc.asi.it or calling us at:

The following table shows the net LECS exposure times obtained with
the old and new FOTs.

2. BeppoSAX AO1 papers
-  -------------------

As of today data for more than 100 AO1 observations have been
delivered to PIs and a number of papers discussing these data are
probably in preparation. In an effort to keep track of all BeppoSAX
publications we would be very grateful if you could send us a copy of
your paper (submitted or accepted) as a postscript file sent by E-mail
to helpdesk@sax.sdc.asi.it with the relevant information about the
author/source in the subject (or paper version sent to SAX/SDC c/o
Nuova Telespazio, via Corcolle 19, I00131 Roma Italy).

If your publication makes use of data retrieved from the SAX SDC on line
archive the following (or equivalent) acknowledgement would be
appreciated:

   "This research has made use of SAXDAS linearized and cleaned event
    files (rev0.X) produced at the BeppoSAX Science Data Center."

3. BeppoSAX new sources naming convention
-  --------------------------------------

We reccommend to use the following convention (compliant to IAU
specifications, see http:/cdsweb.u-strasbg.fr/iau-spec.html) when
naming a source found in one of the BeppoSAX instruments:

1SAX JHHMM.f+ddmm or 1SAX JHHMM.f-ddmm

where:

J refers to the equinox 2000.0 to be used for the coordinates system
HH is the RA hour
MM is the RA minutes
f is the RA decimal fraction of minutes = int(SS/6),
   where SS are the RA seconds
+ or - is the sign of the source declination
dd is the DEC degrees
mm is the DEC arcminutes

if you want to use equatorial coordinates. Alternatively, if you
prefer Galactic coordinates:

1SAX GLLL.ll+BB.bb or 1SAX GLLL.ll-BB.bb

where:

LLL is the Galactic longitude in degrees
ll is the decimal fraction of the Galactic longitude
BB is the Galactic latitude in degrees
bb is the decimal fraction of the Galactic latitude

Examples:

source name 		RA (J2000.0)	DEC
1SAX J1749.6-2803	17 49 36.9	-28 03 59
1SAX G001.2-00.3	17 49 36.9	-28 03 59

4. Rise time thresholds to analyze PDS data
-  -----------------------------------------

The XAS version 2.0.1 contains a bug in the scripts `pds_dir' to
automatically reduce the PDS data. The RiseTime thresholds have been
uncorrectly set to 70, 105 for the DIR001 and DIR002 mode data. If you
have installed the 2.0.1 XAS version you must either edit the script
`pds_dir' and change the lines indicated by arrows:

    1 | 2) pds_packet=pddir00$2
       nchannels=1023
       rtime_in_packet=1
       rtime_low=70          		<----------
       rtime_hi=105			<----------
       flags='0 0';;

into:

       rtime_low=3         		<----------
       rtime_hi=150			<----------

or retrieve the new script from our anonymous ftp site
on www.sdc.asi.it, directory
`pub/software/xas/pds_dir.gz'

Versions 2.0.2 or higher are not affected by such a problem.
