First release of NuSTAR public data and software

The NuSTAR scientific data archive at the ASDC opened on August 29, 2013 providing an initial sample of 29 data sets from observations of a variety of astronomical objects. More data will be added to the archive in the coming months until a routine phase is reached in early 2014 when the NuSTAR public archive will include hundreds of observations. At that point new data sets will become publicly available 2 months after the completion of each observation.

The official package to process the NuSTAR data (NuSTAR Data Analysis Software or NuSTARDAS), which was developed by the ASDC in close collaboration with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), is now available as a new sub-package in the HEASARC's HEASoft multi-mission software (v.6.14 release). The NuSTARDAS data analysis software guide is also available. NuSTARDAS is designed to reduce NuSTAR raw data to generate cleaned and calibrated scientific products such as event files, energy spectra, light-curves, sky images, exposure maps, ARFs and RMFs.  In the near future the ASDC will extend its Interactive Analysis tools to NuSTAR to enable on-line analysis of all NuSTAR public observations without the need to download any software.

The ASDC SED Builder Tool V3.0: a milestone towards handling SEDs in the time domain

The ASDC SED builder V3.0 ( ) is a web-based interactive and graphical tool recently upgraded to extend the analysis of multi-frequency data to the time domain.
This tool allows world-wide users to build Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of astrophysical sources and to study their multi-frequency time evolution by combining data from a variety of sources like:
• spectral and timing datasets from a number of space missions and data archives hosted at ASDC, e.g. Beppo SAX, Swift (XRT, UVOT), Fermi-LAT, AGILE, Planck, Herschel, and NuSTAR,
• flux information from a large number of astronomical catalogs from the ASDC catalog servers (e.g. NVSS, SUMMS, WMAP, WISE, DENIS, Galex, Rosat, XMM, Chandra, Einstein, EXOSAT, HESS, MAGIC, VERITAS, and many others),
• external archive services (NED, 2MASS, Catalina RTS, SDSS, etc.) and
• personal or proprietary spectral and timing data.

New Fermi LAT catalogs and five-year birthday of the mission

The ASDC team is part of the Fermi-LAT  collaboration and contributes to the project in a variety of ways. The following is a list of products and tools that have been recently implemented at ASDC.
An interactive version of a number of  catalogs, some of which are available only at ASDC.
  • The first Fermi LAT catalog of sources detected above 10 GeV during the first three years of mission (
First Fermi hard source list 1FHL).  
  • The incremental list of
Fermi-GBM solar flares containing LAT sun light-curves.
  • The interactive version of the Fermi All-sky Variability Analysis
(FAVA) source catalog
  • The incremental list of the
published LAT AGN/blazars
Monthly flux light curves (based on a likelihood analysis) of variable 2FGL sources are made available within the interactive 2FGL catalog. These data sets will be extended to a four-year period and published within the upcoming 3FGL catalog. The FODA preview tool has been extended to include a task that calculates a preliminary flux-rate light-curve using the aperture photometry method.

June 11, 2013 was also the fifth year birthday since the launch of GLAST, which was renamed Fermi shortly afterward. Fermi results are clearly having a significant impact on current astrophysics and astro-particle physics. ( more). 



Latest news from the AGILE Data Center

AGILE Cycle-5 Public Data Now Available.
The proprietary period for 14 AGILE Cycle-5 Observation Blocks, up to 2012-06-30 has currently expired.
The data are now public and available from the ASDC Multimission Archive (MMIA) webpage for the AGILE Mission.
The query to the archive give access to all AGILE public data through an interactive webpage including the ASDC "Interactive Analysis" tool. The tool allows web users to preview the AGILE data fields, and to perform a preliminary analysis around a chosen sky position.
An updated AGILE catalog including source variability in pointing mode has been published.
The article: "An updated list of AGILE bright gamma-ray sources and their variability in pointing mode",  has been accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (F. Verrecchia et al., A&A 2013, in press).
An on-line version of the new AGILE-GRID catalog, plus some supplementary information, is now available from the ADC web pages at ASDC, as an interactive web table. Light Curves can be accessed from the ASDC Data Explorer tool, in the AGILE GRID Data Products tab.
The 11th AGILE Workshop celebrating the sixth anniversary of the launch of the AGILE satellite, was held in the new ASI Headquarters on May 16-17, 2013.

Cosmic ray database opening at ASDC

The first database dedicated to cosmic rays is now available at ASDC :
In this implementation this web-based service gives access to public data from the
PAMELA experiment, a space-based spectrometer dedicated to the precise measurement of charged cosmic rays.
The database includes total fluxes, time flux variations, as well as fluxes of trapped particles in the Earth magnetosphere, and all published flux ratios. 
For the first time users will have full access also to data that till now was only available as published graphs, such as the PAMELA measurement of the monthly proton flux modulation or the December 2006 solar flare fluxes. 
The cosmic ray database interface allows users to plot the data, download ASCII tables, ROOT graphs and png plots. It offers separate tabs to simplify the searches by categories: fluxes, ratio of fluxes and solar flares. Data can also be searched by reference.

New results of AMS-02 presented at ICRC 2013

The AMS-02 Collaboration presented at the International Cosmic Rays Conference in July 2013 new physics results, obtained with high statistical precision using the data collected during more than 2 years of experiment.

A whole parallel session was dedicated to AMS and new results were presented on:
Proton spectrum from 1 GV to 1.8 TV and searches for spectral breaks (icrc2013-1265)
Helium spectrum from 2 GV to 3 TV and searches for spectral breaks (icrc2013-1262)
Electron spectrum from 1 GeV to 500 GeV (icrc2013-1257)
Positron spectrum from 1 GeV to 350 GeV (icrc2013-1257)
Positron+Electron spectrum from 0.5 Gev to 700 GeV (icrc2013-1267)
B/C ratio from 0.5 GV to 500 GV (icrc2013-1266)
Positron fraction and Positron fraction anisotropy (icrc2013-1264 update with respect to the PRL paper).
Most of these results are based on statistical and systematic errors at O(1%). ( more).




European researchers night 2013 at ASDC

Italian Space Agency (ASI) and ASDC participated to the last "European Researchers' Night" appointment of September 27, 2013 at the INAF Observatory of Rome in Monte Porzio Catone, near Rome. The event, promoted by the European Commission, was in its eighth edition and was included in the "Science Week 2013" a festival with public events and exhibits distributed among the research centers of Frascati, Rome and other sites. ASI and ASDC showed their exhibits, historical telescopes and material, spacecraft models, information panels, photos, and illustrated their space science activities devoted to the observation and understanding of our Cosmos to the public at the museum realized in the "Cupola degli Scozzesi", an historical dome of the Monte Porzio Catone Observatory. This allowed the large public to become familiar with the technical development and scientific research projects in modern space astrophysics and in ASI-participated astronomical satellites. ( more ).
